Sep 24,  · On their third album, "illadelph halflife," {cq} the Roots capture in the studio the same chemistry between rhymes and live instruments that they've generated on stage. The album does include samples, but they're samples of the band's own exploratory jam sessions in Philadelphia's legendary Sigma Sound Studios/5().

The release Illadelph Halflife was the group's third album and their first to break the Top 40 on the Billboard chart, spurred in part by MTV's airplay of the video for "What They Do" (a parody of rap video clichés) and "Clones", which was their first single to reach the top five on the rap charts.

I slept on this one. Hard. At first I viewed Illadelph Halflife as the groundwork to be perfected on Things Fall Apart, but there is definite genius to be found on this album as well. Black Thought is one of the greatest MCs ever, and Illadelph puts a spotlight DIRECTLY on his abilities. The beats on here are floaty, catchy, jazzy and dark.

The Roots *second* (the first release is not all thatwidely known, I still don't know much about it) CD brought a fresh perspective to hiphop. Namely, phat ass jazz combined with dope lyrical skills. Back with their 3rd CD, _illadelph halflife_, they continue to pump .
